How do you get more fruits and vegetables into your diet?Do you have any creative recipes or simple tips?
I am not a big fan of vegetables, so I drink V8 juice. Another thing that will get me to eat more vegetables are those fancy veggie trays you get at a supermarket. They're more expensive, but the convenience and vareity makes me want to much on them more.
I follow a 1,000 calorie meal plan by American Diabetic Association and all the food groups are in the plan. I get enough fruit and vegetables and do not need a reminder.
Although I am not diabetic, I wanted to be more accountable for what I eat. It amazed me how I overdid previously on some food groups and unnecessary snacks.
Well my favourite fruit dishes are home made muesli with fruit, home made yoghurt with fruit and fruit punch with pieces of tropical fruit in it. My favourite vegetable dishes are Cornish pasties made with about 10% meat, and vegetable soups like minestrone and borshch.
I'd imagine this question is for meat eaters because I am vegetarian and do not seem to have a problem with my veggies!!! :)
I recently started to drink a glass of V-8 Fusion each day.
i buy fruits and vegetables and wash and cut them up when i get them home ,that way when i am hungry i can just grab something quick. i also only buy fruit juice to drink. i think its good to have sweet and salty stuff because when you snack that is what you want so melon grapes dried cranberry or fruit cups are good for sweet and carrots pepper slices cucumber green onions string beans all are good raw dipped in to salad dressing
Just eat them the way you like them.
Those who have not money, what should they do?
I eat cereal and fruit every day for breakfast. And I drink a lot of natural (like Naked brand) juices in between meals. And instead of greasy snacks I munch on grapes, dried apricots, apples, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, snap peas! It is not that difficult :)
make a smoothie of broccoli, cucumber, carrot, spinach, celery, mango, watermelon, and strawberry. it sounds vile but its actually REALLY GOOD.
I put a banana in my cereal every morning. For lunch, I always have 2 fruits. Apple and orange.apple and peach.kiwi and plum. Then, I make sure that my lunch or dinner has 2 vegetable portions included. Fruit is so easy and yummy to eat, I've found to get my 'five' that 3 fruits a day make it easy!
Gotta to plate your all your food in one according to proportion and size. Conventional ways of serving meals in; take what you need and eat what you take; gets alittle unbalance usually. Children are fuzzy eater, greens and fruits normally do not appeal. Plating all in one helps reducing wastage and makes children eat what is good not what is most tasty.
Choosy eater
We live in New Zealand, and so fresh fruit is available almost all year round. We have fresh oranges on our trees, and we get Bananas from the Phillipines etc. We buy Frozen veg and use the Stir Fry mixes, as there is a variety of veg in them.My wife is a diabetic, and so our diet is sugar and salt free.We use lemon juice to flavour cooking.Or Celery Salt.So we get all the right foods. As for recipes I'd try allrecipes.com
Buy some and eat them
V8 juice
I drink V-8 V fusion,it has a full serving of fruit and vegetables per serving and is 100% juice.I also add friut to my jello and cearel and vegetables to my sandwiches like lettuce, tomato, sprouts ,cucumber,radish..
Here is my 2 cents & I hope u do take my advice.
Morning Oath meal, Banana, orange juice & V8.
Lunch McDonald Salad ( Southwest style )
Big mac & 2 bottles of water.
Snack time Cut apple, water melon & peach.
A small bag of cookie Kashi brand
Dinner Pasta cream sauce with shrimp ( I use shrimp from Cotesssa brand )b
side of boil vegetable such as cauliflower & Broccoli
I am sure u will not gain so much weight & u have enough fiber to go on.
I am wearing size 4 for all my life & never gain a pound.
1. Buy seasonally - the produce is cheaper & better tasting also it will be more.
2. Local. Buy local. the vitamins & minerals of produce seem to diminish the longer they r in transport & maturing for grocery stores. It also supports local farmers, who actually appreciate ur business & will directly benefit from it versus some corporation.
3. Try to grow some of ur own vegetables. The bell peppers I grew this year (easy actually!) were as sweet as grapes.
4. Here r some food ideas.
Salads.
Smoothies.
Veggie juices.
Fruits & Veggies as side items with lemon juice, a marinade or dressing.
Veggies dipped in hummus.
Vegetable soup.
Wrap them in pitas. Put them in anything u typically eat.
Dried fruits or fruit leather rather than candy.
5. Research into the cuisines of China & Crete. Their diets contain high amounts of vegetables. In China veggies r the main event. Dessert is usually watermelon or maybe some lychees.
I make myself strawberry banana smoothies. I LOVE the sweet taste. The only sweetener is..the bananas!
I love vegetables. I try to include a side dish of vegetables with every meal. A particular mix I enjoy is steamed baby carrots with broccoli and zucchini with garlic salt and crushed red pepper. Sometimes I will just have that as a meal.
Frozen veggies are also a great substitution for fresh as they are picked at the peak of freshness and many of the vitamins and minerals are preserved.
Well, u can blend fruits together with ice cream as a dessert. Kind of like a smoothie, & it tastes pretty good too, no matter how many fruits u add! (Just make sure u have it as a dessert, or a cooling drink every once in a while, too much ice cream is not very good for you!)
Another way is just to try to enjoy the tastes of fruits & vegetables, & try putting them in salads with small amounts of dressing if u want.
Here is a simple, tasty salad recipe for you:
You will need:
Serving of lettuce (how much u want to eat)
Maple Syrup
2 or 3 Raw Finely Chopped Garlic Cloves (optional)
Thinly Sliced Apples
Peppers (red is always good, it has a sweeter taste)
Basically toss all the ingredients together, just do not go overboard with the garlic, as it has a certain ''biting'' sensation that makes the salad taste good in smaller quantities.
Note: Also be careful with the maple syrup! (Just add enough so that u can LIGHTLY taste it)
i would agree that making ur own lunch to consist of healthy items instead of purchasing foods high in fat & bad cholesterol is a better way to ward off eating too many unhealthy foods. this in fact increases ur body is immune system, in some cases, from food allergies & could help to restore ur natural defenses. thereby greatly protecting u with the right vitamins & minerals via ur healthier lunch ( or breakfast and/or supper..best to eat right all the time i would have to say ). Baby carrots, organic local produce, various & delicious natural fruits. now envision yourself having a good meal that is good for u as well. = D
SunRype Fruit Source bars with Veggies..mmmmmm
My recipes
Veggie lasagna/ with or with out meat
just add mixed veggies, like the cauliflower, broccoli frozen bag type. I also eat those mixed veggies with some fat free ranch. Tuna delight: tuna, mayo, tomato, onions, cucumbers, fresh spinach, celery & then add some lemon juice. You can eat it in a sandwich or with saltines.
Try to eat yogurt or make some fruit smoothies. I personally like to eat frozen berries as a snack.
I love to eat chicken broth with spinach & some tapatio hot sauce & some saltine crackers.
Sea weed noodle soup was pretty good too.
Flour tortilla cheese crisp with some sauteed onions, bell peppers, mushrooms & then some fresh broccoli.
You can also used those same sauteed veggies on some corn tortilla tacos. I put cheese (u can add any meat) in the corn tortilla & get them crunchy over some hot oil, then I add some fresh ham & some homemade Mexican salsa. Corn with some shredded cheese, mayo, tapatio hot sauce & some lemon or lime taste great. Also try to add some fat free wip cream to ur fruits & mix it up a bit.
Put some mango salsa on some fish tacos.
You can also make a profile on sparkpeople.com & they will make u meal plans & help u with so much more & it is all for free. I found sparkpeople.com about a year ago & it is very surprising as to how help u can get for free.
sparkpeople.com
to make sure just think there candy
The main difference I have noted about myself is that I eat most produce with little or no preparation-wash and eat. I do not require dip, salad dressing or cooking beyond a light steam or grill to enjoy the flavor. I have eaten them like this all my life (used to go in the garden as a child to get lunch).
Soups, stews, gumbos and chowders can add a wide variety of vegetables to meals and I use them liberally. Vegetables can also be used in meatloaf, ground turkey or ground beef patties as a filler. Fruits are great in jello salads, in pies, and fresh on kabobs which kids enjoy. Of course the juice is an eye opener in the morning.
I am vegetarian too - can not avoid them pesky fruits & vegs :-)
For me, it is mainly about convenience. When I buy fruit, I immediately cut it up or clean it, & store it in tupperware (i.e. grapes, strawberries, & cantaloupe). With veggies, such as carrots or celery, I cut it up & store it in tupperware covered with water so they stay crispy. I recently subscribed to a great vegetarian magazine (Vegetarian Times), to get recipes & creative ideas. I am not a vegetarian, but I have tried to replace the high fat meats with healthier vegetables. For instance, I have my hubby grill portabello mushrooms for me instead of a hamburger. I never thought I could go with out a homemade juicy cheeseburger, but the portabello mushroom with low-fat pepper jack cheese & avocado is pretty darn good! Grilling a variety of veggies is a great way to get ur daily dose with out feeling deprived of other high fat food options. Hope some of this helped!
simple.
i am vegetarian, it is all that i eat.
breakfast fruit!
lunch an assortment of leafy green veggies with some beans and tofu for extra protein and iron
and dinner an assortment of veggies with some pasta and other carbs along with some fruit for dinner!
i freeze fruit and munch on it as a snack instead of feasting on ice cream i have a nice bowl of frozen raspberries and strawberries
When I grocery shop I start in produce and fill half the cart before going to other parts of the store. Tonight my grocery shopping was entirely fresh fruits and veggies so this week we will eat lettuce, tomatoes, corn on the cob, acorn squash, cantaloupes cabbage and whatever else got in those bags. I had corn tonight but still have 5 more ears. Tomorrow BLT salad with corn on the cob for a fresh summer tasting dinner.
I would do it day-by-day basis, as in add fruits in the morning. And then once u get into the habit, then u can buy more fruits & veggies to ur daily diet.
You can make a smoothie ahead of time, & put it in ur travel mug when you're working in the morning,or maybe bring some ftruit with you.
There r no limitations too for lunch or dinner. Try to eat fruits & veggies in ur daily diet.
Before I did not eat much of these things until I realized it was good for u & sometimes refreshing too. I remind myself to bring some fruit(apples, berries, grapes, mangoes, etcetera) before I go to work.
Keep carrot & celery sticks in the fridge for snacking.
Ask for a salad or some fruit instead of fries with a sandwich.
When u buy lettuce, wash it right away, tear it into bite-sized pieces, & put it in an easy-open container so u have no excuse not to eat a salad every day.
Good ''lazy person'' vegetables & fruits include: zucchini (just wash & slice), broccoli (wash, slice the stems & break the blossoms), blueberries (wash & pick off stems), grapes (wash & have someone cute feed them to you).
Keeping frozen fruit around is handy for making smoothies; add a single serving size container of yogurt, a handful or two of fruit of ur choice, & a little juice or fruit nectar of ur choice, & u r set!
I also try to keep a baggy of grapes or another fruit handy to snack on, especially when the vending machines r calling my name!
Slicing a squash of ur choice lengthwise, & adding a little vinegar, spices of ur choice, & olive oil (or Italian dressing), then grilling it (either outdoors, or on a Foreman type grill) makes a yummy side dish.
Making minestrone soup is a good way to incorporate a few servings of vegetables & also a good way of using up some of the vegetable u might happen to have in ur fridge or freezer.
Some folks already mentioned fruit juice, or V-8-- excellent suggestions.
Good luck!!
Well instead of eating chocolate just substitute our sweet-tooth with a bowl of fruits.
eat salad for lunch, have a dinner which includes at least 2 veggies. for snacks have celery or other raw veggies.
eat them
I am a carnivore, so it is hard for me to remind myself. Best to have a V8 with a little vodka, then time to go surf!
I drink SuperFoods Supreme every morning when I first wake up.
I make sure that I stock my house full of fresh fruits and vegetables, and I try to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into every meal that I have including snacks.
I love fruit smoothies, banana or blueberry muffins, fruit cobbler,pies,etc.. I also try to vegetables and dip for a snack or fresh fruit dipped into yogurt instead of candy or potato chips.
Step one: buy them. Once in ur fridge or sitting in a bowl on the table, there is an incentive to eat them before they spoil.
Step two: use as finger-food in quick snacks like an apple, carrot or celery sticks with a piece of cheese or boiled egg. Good for lunch as well.
Step three: use in simple recipes, such as chopped orange, apple & banana in plain yoghurt, or a 'throw everything in it' salad. You can use garbanzos & other beans as well as assorted greens, or toss in some cooked shrimp or sardines.
Step four: use in soups or cereal. Either float snow peas or green onion etc. on the top of consomme or create ur own mix & boil up together with or without canned bouillon, with or without pasta or rice. Put fruit raw on cereal or cook in oatmeal. Apple & cinnamon with nuts tastes good.
Step five: check out all the great recipes in books & online.
Drink fruit juice and fruit smoothies instead of fizzy drinks, snack on grapes, apples, oranges etc. Make fruit salads for desserts. Good luck x
just eat them
I am horrible at eating my fruits and veggies, so I will some times have a V8. A great way in the morning that I love is to add a diced up apple, some raisins, currants to oatmeal. It is very tasty!
Instead of cookies for a snack, eat an apple, an orange, etc.
Eat a salad with your dinner and some green veggies.
Eat some fruit for breakfast (ex: grapefruit)
oohhh. love salads. fuit salads arent bad either. broths wih onion, carot, parsley, and broccili are always tasty. cant go wrong with adding some fruits to your cereal. sandwhiches are always a great way to add vegetables galore.
you chop them up put them in your food and eat them
drink orange juice. add lettuce & tomato to your sandwich. peppers & onions can go in almost any meal.
I sneak vegetables into common dinner dishes. For example, I will shred carrots really really small and sneak them into spaghetti sauce and my husband does not even notice it!
i drnik V8 Splash.. that stuff is like crack and comes in a bunch of yummy flavors.. and its actually god for you. contains 1 or more servings of beggies and fruits.
after a recent update from another user i retract my statement that V8 is healthy for you. while it may still be yummy, it is apparently not all its ''cracked'' up to be. It has a slightly alarming amount of high fructose corn syrup, which after some reasearch is not such a healthy thing. i apologize
easy i'm a vegetarian.
